Summer is when slithering creatures crawl out of their dwelling and haunt air-conditioned houses and offices. Several incidents have been reported where strange reptiles have found their way into domestic households, scaring the residents out of their wits.

The wildlife cell of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) receives at least 25 calls everyday, seeking help or complaining about a reptile’s entry into a residence.

On Saturday, the wildlife cell received a call from the residence of an IAS officer at HSR Layout. A cobra had entered officer Agawane’s house. The wildlife team got there on time to rescue it.

There are 33 BBMP wildlife volunteers who help residents capture reptiles entering their homes. During summer, snakes crawl out of their nests and come in search of cool places, said head of wildlife cell, R Sharath Babu.

In Bangalore, three species of snakes are predominant: Rat snake that is non-venomous and the venomous cobra and Russell’s viper.

A volunteer from the BBMP wildlife cell pointed out that, in summer, the snakes go in search of cool places because of the rise in temperature. They enter a garage, a house or any place they find shade.

The volunteer also advised the public not to light fire to vacant sites during summer.

“Already, the temperature is high and when people light fire to vacant sites, the heat forces reptiles to come out of their nests. This is when they enter domestic households,” he said.

The identification card provided by the BBMP should be checked before people permit men to catch animals, because unauthorised people hurt the creatures while rescuing it, the volunteer said.

People from different parts of the country want to settle down in Bangalore not only because it has an equable climate but also because it is fast becoming a thriving cosmopolitan metropolis. So, everyone wants to own a house or a site here but there is a problem: Some people, after buying sites, do not care to maintain them, thus creating nuisance in the entire locality.
To control/stop this trend, BBMP has initiated a drive to clean up the vacant sites. This has been taken up seriously by the BBMP in the HSR Layout, which is a sign of some good development. The cleaning work started one week before, though the BBMP had sent the circular to this effect to the concerned ward office long ago.
“Initially it started in 3rd Sector and we have cleaned 14 sites so far in this sector. Now we have taken up work in 7th Sector. Other sites will get cleaned up based on the grievances received from the Residents’ Welfare Association and the general public,” a BBMP official said.
“The residents of 1st Sector have written to us to clean 40 sites in their sector. So our next priority will be that,” said T S Prasanna Kumar, Junior Engineer, Ward 174, and added, “The cost of cleaning will be tripled and reimbursed from the owner of the site as a penalty. This amount will be added to the property tax he is liable to pay. We are also writing to BDA about the cleaning of sites which belong to them. Later, we will consult the revenue officer to give us a clear picture of vacant sites. By this, our work will become easy and we can keep a proper account of the sites and their cleaning.”
The residents of HSR Layout are happy about this drive by BBMP and they have thanked Corporator Latha Narasimhamurthy who has initiated this move. They hope that maximum number of sites will be cleaned by BBMP as early as possible.

The BBMP has resumed issuing voter’s photo identity cards (EPIC).  It has been distributing forms with names and other details to those whose names are in the electoral list, but do not have photo ID cards. Besides, they are also correcting mistakes in those IDs where there are mistakes. submitting a filled up Form-6 and your name will be registered in the voters’ list. The last date is July 6 for inclusion of names.

The ID cards are being distributed in various locations in and around HSR Layout through out July to October months.

People in Bangalore have been known to use several novel methods to keep their neighborhood clean, but residents of HSR Layout have come up with a rather simple way to deal with trash offenders: they go and have a polite conversation with them.

The idea, said R S Hiremath, president, HSR Layout Sector 2 Residents’ Welfare Association, is not to reason with those who dump garbage in someone else’s yard but to understand them. “We want to know their psychology,” he told Bangalore Mirror.

Every Saturday for the last two weeks, five volunteers from the 10-member association five people have been standing near empty sites in the layout, and watching out for trash offenders. “Around 6 am, maids or housewives come to throw garbage.

Some do it because they have no  choice, but schools, hospitals, and shops come because they haven’t set up their own waste collection systems,” said the 48-year-old Hiremath.

Volunteers go up and casually talk to people casually dumping garbage. They try to persuade the offenders to stop the practice.

ROUND TWO

The group plans to print information collected from such interactions on handbills, and offer solutions to illegal dumping. One solution is to install more wayside garbage bins, and the association is working on that. “In HSR Layout Sector 2, we have about 400 homes. We will give out handbills to all of them,” he said.

Rithika Tiwari, another member of the association, said that garbage collection was not organised enough. “We have found out that many homes don’t have a garbage collection process. Also, we have few dustbins in the area,” she said.

Dr Meenakshi Bharat, who spearheaded a source segregation and solid waste management campaign at Malleswaram, said, “This campaign will help. HSR Layout is a fairly new layout, with a number of individual houses. The residents should know how to handle their garbage.”

Hiremath and his men also plan to talk to institutional offenders and help them set up garbage disposal systems.

This is going to be a prime Commercial hub already there is Reliance fresh, 2 Schools, Sherwin Williams, Aranya Restaurant, Canara Bank and many offices on this Service Road and the advantage is there is no Drainage on this side!!
