Since the past three months, a group of bike-borne muggers has been targeting motorists on lonely stretches of the Outer Ring Road, especially between Bellandur and Marathalli, Iblur and Kaikondrahalli, and Kaikondrahalli and Wipro. They are bold enough to strike victims in broad daylight. Police say they strike only once or twice in a month.

Cops on alert
The HSR Layout police have sent e-mail alerts to residents and IT companies in the area. A four-man patrol squad has been formed to nab the gang. The mobile numbers of the officers/beat constables are:
Inspector Rajesh — 9448448833
Sub-Inspector Mirza Ali Raza — 9972833003
Ashok (towards Marathalli) — 9902660986 (on Cheetah)
Vijayamurthy (towards Iblur) — 9980834703 (on Cheetah)
Manjunath — 9845668681 (crime squad)
Ravindranath — 9980399551 (crime squad)

Incidents of highway thieves waylaying unsuspecting motorists are now all too common in the city.

The robbers’ modus operandi is to stop a motorist at a lonely spot, falsely accuse their target of causing injury to one of their number and then demand ‘compensation’ – sometimes at knife point.

A step further

Anup, a resident of Koramangala, was waylaid and robbed of cash and valuables, but the thieves added insult to injury by stripping him. They then clicked his nude pictures on their mobiles and blackmailed him into paying Rs 90,000 before making off with his car. Read more at BangaloreMirror

Sold them for a mere Rs. 4,000, without even knowing what they are used for or the actual value of the goods

His own greed proved costly for 23-year-old V Santosh, who used to steal laptops and sell them at less than one-tenth of their original price — to buy chicken kebabs and beer. He had been involved in the crime for the last two months, without even knowing what laptops do.

He simply sold them to a local for Rs. 4,000 apiece. All this stopped when the HSR Layout police arrested him on Monday.

Santosh had come to Bangalore as a lorry cleaner last year from Tamil Nadu. After working for a while, he tried his hand as a lorry driver, but could not get a job, so he started working as a security person at a building construction site at the HSR Layout. But he was not happy with his meager income.

Santosh, a beer and chicken lover, lived alone and used to visit a local hotel for food. But since he was always short of money, he could not have these items to his heart’s content. For this, he even took loans from many people.

Two months ago, he saw an engineer carrying a laptop. Since Santosh had never seen anything like that, he asked his friend Nandeesh, who apparently knew something about them. Nandeesh made him an offer — he would buy any laptop Santosh could steal for Rs. 4,000.

Santosh agreed, and Nandeesh told him how and who to steal from. Since HSR Layout has the maximum number of techies as residents, there was no dearth of laptops. Another reason they were targetted was because most of them work in odd shifts, and would leave their doors open so as not to disturb their roommates.

Santosh went on a spree, and stole 16 laptops, LCD TV and four cameras.Following over 15 complaints, the cops started asking around, and found out that Santosh was seen at many scenes of crime. So they laid a trap, and started tapping his phone, and finally arrested him on Monday.

In his confession, he told the police, “I love chicken kebabs, and for the last two months, I had started drinking beer regularly. But all this cost money, and I never had enough. So my friend told me to steal these items. I don’t even know what these devices do.”

LY Rajesh, Police Inspector, HSR Layout said, “He stole laptops only for beer and kebabs. He doesn’t know how much they cost. We also investigating his friend and soon we get all attempts of both. The police have recovered all laptops, and have sent Santosh to judicial custody.”

Identification marks: One person is stout and has a dark complexion. Another one is lean with medium complexion.

MODUS OPERANDI

They stop your vehicle on a pretext, saying that you caused an accident.

Before stopping your vehicle, they continuously honk. Till the time you stop your vehicle, they are behind you.

With little opportunity, immediately they sit inside your vehicle.

They try to panic you by saying: by accident you have injured a person and compensation has to be paid.

They tell you, you have to pay the amount immediately, as the injured person is the brother of a local don; If you don’t settle, the amount might be problem and they induce you to pay the money.

They ask you to give the money, by drawing from an ATM.

Usually they target a person driving alone in the vehicle.

They will persuade you to pay the money, they speak Kannada and broken Hindi.

They will take money or gold but not cell phone.

HOW TO PREVENT AND HOW YOU CAN HELP THE POLICE IN NABBING THEM

If you come across such an incident, be bold, do not panic.

Lock the internal locks of the vehicle. So that they cannot sit inside your vehicle.

If by chance they get into your vehicle, get out immediately – you will be in a public place. Raise your voice and call the people around.

Immediately take their photograph and as well as vehicle number plate with your cell phone.

If they try to threaten you or manhandle you, keep a pepper spray as a defense and use it properly and carefully “if necessary”.

In there are any such cases or even if you suspect any such persons in the locality, please call on the below mentioned cell phone numbers.

If you are bold enough, immediately snatch their bike keys. Take their photographs, call the police, if the public are willing to help, secure them and hand over to police.

If you are smart/tactful enough and can hold them in conversion, inform the police by way of SMS or call and assure that you will pay them and engage them till police reaches you.

You can even tell them that you can arrange money from your friend and take them to place, where you know the people and then try to catch them with the help of known people and hand over them to police.

A police constable, who was injured while saving a woman from robbers, has been advised two months rest by doctors.

Venugopal, 26, was hurt while grapping with one of the two armed robbers, who had been threatening to murder a fashion designer, Vasundhara, 25, at her house in HSR Layout on August 13.

The constable’s brave act saved the woman.

Though he was discharged from hospital, the constable expressed fear that the injury might affect the mobility of his wrist.
Inspector LY Rajesh of HSR Layout police station said his men had gone to the woman’s house on 31st Main after getting information about the robbery. When they reached her house, they found the robbers were about to stab her.

“Fortunately, we reached the spot on time and rescued her. It was the constable, who grappled and overpowered one of the burglars, and prevented any heinous crime from taking place,” the inspector said.

One of the robbers stabbed Venugopal on his wrist, as the policeman tried to rescue the woman. Though injured, the tough constable refused to loosen his grip on the robber, and with the help of a sub-inspector in the team, disarmed and secured the assailant.

Later at the St John’s Hospital, it was found that the robber had damaged the nerves in Venugopal’s left wrist. He was hospitalised for a week, before he was sent home. He is now advised to take rest so that the nerves would heal.

The robber who had stabbed Venugopal was later identified as Arjun, 20. He had been employed as a cook in Vasundhara’s house since a month ago. The accused, a native of Bihar, had been watching the household, with the intention of returning to his native state after robbing the family.

Arjun decided to strike on August 13. He knew that Vasundhara’s mother would be in Visakhapatnam, and her brother, Siddarth, a lawyer, would be returning home late. The woman’s father has been working in Kuwait.

The accused roped in his friend Ravi, 22, to commit the crime. But his plans went awry when Vasundhara managed to inform her brother over the phone about the robbery. Siddarth alerted the HSR Layout police, who immediately swung into action.

Police said the robbers attacked them to escape arrest, but failed. Both of them were arrested. Investigators were suspecting that Arjun joined as a cook with the sole intention of robbing the family.

The city police commissioner, Shankar M Bidari, presented Venugopal a cash award of Rs5,000 for his brave act, besides Rs20,000 to meet his medical expenses. The constable has been treated under the Arogya Bhagya scheme.

Commuters are taking the road parallel to NICE Road (above) connecting Hosur Road and Bannerghatta Road fearing blockades by protesters.

Motorists have been using this road since the NICE corridor has been blocked by villagers protesting over some issue. But, in the last three days, techies and corporate executives have complained of muggings on the road.

The latest attack was reported on Wednesday by a techie of Wipro Technologies who was attacked by a few men late in the afternoon on a deserted stretch. The techie had used the road connecting the back gate of Wipro Technologies and Bannerghata Road.

Following several such incidents, cautionary messages have begun appearing on the web and community group sites alerting other techies and advising them to either avoid the stretch or be careful while using it.

Posting his experience on the web, the techie from Wipro said, “Folks, driving towards Begur-Koppa and Bannerghatta road, please be careful, as the bike gang seems to have expanded their base of operations here. The same incident, as reported by so many people around Sarjapur Road area, happened to me on Wednesday afternoon around 4.30 near Bettadasanapura.”

Bhaskar Reddy timed his thefts with the daily routine followed by techies in the area. He allegedly broke into homes in the neighbourhood early in the morning when the men were in the bathroom and cleaned the flats of all electronic goods.

He reportedly found the going good till a team from HSR Layout police station in plainclothes finally caught up with him on Sunday.

Reddy, a native of Chittur district, came to Bangalore two years ago. He did not stick very long to his first job as a daily worker in cyber cafes and soon took to robbing houses in isolated places in Bangalore.

A few months later, Reddy abandoned robbery for stealing LPG cylinders from hotels and apartments and was soon arrested. “Bhaskar Reddy sold cylinders for half their retail price.

He stole nearly 100 cylinders on the outskirts of Bangalore,” confirmed HSR Layout Sub-Inspector Mirza Ali Raza.

Following his arrest, Reddy gave up stealing cylinders and instead took to cleaning techies’ houses in HSR Layout of expensive electronic goods.

The sudden spells of darkness engulfing the layout, courtesy the load-shedding , is also one of the main contributory factors for the spurt in chain snatching incidents.

We cant blame all on the power cuts, the commissioner however felt that Bangalore was still a safe city. As far as the specifics of chain snatching incidents were concerned , the culprits are usually young boys around 20-25 years on Bikes. They are targeting those near the Temples and those who are on a evening walk near various parks of HSR Layout, specially 2nd Sector Park near Purva Fairmont and the one on 5th Main Road.

Police in Action Mode:

HSR Layout police is taking no chance in letting these incidents increase any further. To check this crime, they have increased the patrolling around temples, parks and vulnerable areas like, 23rd cross, 5th main, Hosapalya road, Mangammapalya main road. So don’t be surprised if any Khakhi Cop stops you and asks you to remove your helmet and asks about your address etc, Be polite and answer all there queries they are doing it for our safety.

Suggestions to avoid becoming sitting ducks of Chain Snatching Gangs:

Avoid unnecessary display of jewels.

Be vigilant when walking alone

In case anyone’s chain is snatched, raise an alarm, alert neighbors or the public and inform HSR Police Station or Madivala Police Station if you are near Silk Board or Teachers colony.
