Green=Organic, Red=Inorganic

The HSR Layout residents and their Corporator Latha Narasimhamurthy are going all out to make their layout clean and garbage-free. They had launched a campaign recently to create awareness about waste segregation in Agara Village and HSR Layout 4th Sector. The campaign emphasized the need for separating wet and dry kitchen wastes and putting them in two different bins (red and green) and handing them over to garbage collectors.

BBMP has already supplied 1,000 red bins and 1,000 green bins to ward No 174, each of which has a capacity to carry two to three kg of waste. Most of the residents in Agara Village have received the bins and are using them, but the residents in Sector 4 say that they have received only about 50 bins. However, here is the big question: Will the residents use these bins in an effective way even after receiving these dustbins? To this, the Corporator Latha Narasimhamurthy said, “We are not distributing these waste bins just because they come free. We are making people aware of the waste management system and its uses during the door-to-door distribution. We also collect data like the names of the residents, their phone numbers and addresses. This helps us keep track of the waste disposal.”
She also said, “We thought that since Sector 4 is a small area, we will cover the whole sector by distributing waste bins and make it a modal sector. But now we are facing difficulties. Volunteers are very few and many houses will be closed and some won’t open their doors at all. So we have now decided to distribute them in 7th Sector since they too require them.”

Have an aim in life and work hard towards realizing the goals – advised former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam.

Inaugurating the JSS Public School at HSR Layout on Thursday, Kalam interacted with students, narrated stories as well as made them take an oath to lead an honest life, free from corruption.

“Having a small aim in life is a crime. We need to work with integrity. It’s important to achieve success with integrity,” Kalam said.

Speaking on ‘What milestone will I create in my journey of life’, Kalam said: “To be successful four important principles are – have an aim in life, acquire knowledge, work hard, have perseverance and learn to manage time.”

Dr Kalam emphasized that each individual should plant 10 saplings to achieve a target of having 10 billion new trees by 2015.

Encouraging youngsters to inculcate the habit of reading, the former President advised students to have a home library.

Though the event was delayed by more than an hour, students waited patiently and interacted enthusiastically with the President.

Dr Sri Shivakumara Swamiji asked students to protect freedom of the country and work towards nation building.

Suttur Kshetra, Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra swamiji, said, “The JSS school at HSR Layout started with four students six years ago and today it has more than 1,000.”

The event was presided by governor of Tripura Dr D Y Patil and minister for transport R Ashok, minister for primary and secondary education Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri, BBMP mayor S K Nataraj and deputy mayor N Dayanand
Thankfully no deaths have taken place except for minor injuries, but do we need to wait until then?. The Authorities needs to build Speed Breakers at all these junction and install “Round About Island” specially at 19th Main and 17th Cross Junction which is very wide and creates lot of confusion among the drivers.

Because of the Flyover work at Agara and 14th Main Signal most of the outer ring road traffic is passing through HSR Layout, finding shortcuts and trying every available road causing disturbance to the residents, and adding this they forget that they are not on Outer Ring Road and are passing through a residential Layout, but they zoom at great speeds on these roads. To ease up the traffic the civic agencies upgraded almost all the Main roads to 60-80 Feet but they forget to provide safety measures tooo!.

Some of these Deadly roads include 17th Cross, 22nd Cross, 24th Main, 19th Main etc. Waiting for Some Quick Action.

People in Bangalore have been known to use several novel methods to keep their neighborhood clean, but residents of HSR Layout have come up with a rather simple way to deal with trash offenders: they go and have a polite conversation with them.

The idea, said R S Hiremath, president, HSR Layout Sector 2 Residents’ Welfare Association, is not to reason with those who dump garbage in someone else’s yard but to understand them. “We want to know their psychology,” he told Bangalore Mirror.

Every Saturday for the last two weeks, five volunteers from the 10-member association five people have been standing near empty sites in the layout, and watching out for trash offenders. “Around 6 am, maids or housewives come to throw garbage.

Some do it because they have no choice, but schools, hospitals, and shops come because they haven’t set up their own waste collection systems,” said the 48-year-old Hiremath.

Volunteers go up and casually talk to people casually dumping garbage. They try to persuade the offenders to stop the practice.

ROUND TWO

The group plans to print information collected from such interactions on handbills, and offer solutions to illegal dumping. One solution is to install more wayside garbage bins, and the association is working on that. “In HSR Layout Sector 2, we have about 400 homes. We will give out handbills to all of them,” he said.

Rithika Tiwari, another member of the association, said that garbage collection was not organised enough. “We have found out that many homes don’t have a garbage collection process. Also, we have few dustbins in the area,” she said.

Dr Meenakshi Bharat, who spearheaded a source segregation and solid waste management campaign at Malleswaram, said, “This campaign will help. HSR Layout is a fairly new layout, with a number of individual houses. The residents should know how to handle their garbage.”

Hiremath and his men also plan to talk to institutional offenders and help them set up garbage disposal systems.

The first part was a review of the activities of the association during the preceding year. The second part was the interaction of residents with the civic officials from BBMP, BDA, BWSSB, BMTC, and Police department. We had requested these organisations to depute senior officials and engineers to interact with residents and give suitable responses to the queries.

Unfortunately barring a few, civic agencies were represented by junior staff who showed helplessness in answering our queries. KPTCL and BESCOM representatives were absent; we were most disappointed. The local corporator Latha Narasimhamurthy was present through out the meeting.

Officebearers of the Association: The new President is R S Hiremath. and Vice -President Purushotham. Channakeshava A is the Secretary. Brig Murthy will support the association as an advisor.

The muggers prowling the stretch of Ring Road near HSR Layout appear to have shifted to the road connecting Electronics City with Bannerghatta Road, which runs parallel to the NICE corridor.

Commuters are taking the road parallel to NICE Road (above) connecting Hosur Road and Bannerghatta Road fearing blockades by protesters.

Motorists have been using this road since the NICE corridor has been blocked by villagers protesting over some issue. But, in the last three days, techies and corporate executives have complained of muggings on the road.

The latest attack was reported on Wednesday by a techie of Wipro Technologies who was attacked by a few men late in the afternoon on a deserted stretch. The techie had used the road connecting the back gate of Wipro Technologies and Bannerghata Road.

Following several such incidents, cautionary messages have begun appearing on the web and community group sites alerting other techies and advising them to either avoid the stretch or be careful while using it.

Posting his experience on the web, the techie from Wipro said, “Folks, driving towards Begur-Koppa and Bannerghatta road, please be careful, as the bike gang seems to have expanded their base of operations here. The same incident, as reported by so many people around Sarjapur Road area, happened to me on Wednesday afternoon around 4.30 near Bettadasanapura.”
